Some thoughts about dividing activity.
I've been here on dA for about 10 years and I didn't really get much traction going. I love my watchers, especially those that comment every time I post anything, but all those that fav things randomly, cheers to you too. One of the reasons I don't clean up my gallery is that I don't want to delete something someone might have liked, even if it was a single person and they were 14 at the time.
But people who watch me would probably criticize my inactivity on this site. I rarely post more than one thing a month anymore and I'm not someone like xa-xa-xa
, whose quality justifies the low quantity.
I am also running a tumblr blog though; it was started as an outlet for lower-quality art and sketches just so that I could post stuff daily. It's also a place to experiment, since tumblr is a lot more lax about adult themes than dA. You can find it here [NSFW]: smaggthesmug.tumblr.com/
The thing is that the tumblr account did get some traction; it's not big by any stretch, but it's way bigger than dA and in a much shorter time. Part of it is being able to discover artists through the tags system and part doing some sketches for people over at 4chan, some of whom would trickle down there to see more of my stuff.
However I think I somehow made the tumblr crowd my "core audience" so to speak, one that is way too easily satisfied. So I focused on those quick sketches more than I should have on finished, quality art.
It's kind of disheartening to work on something for a bit of time and post it here to receive no feedback, and yet a very bad sketch over at tumblr can easily get some response. But I like dA comments, fav and gallery system a lot more. But I also became addicted to that instant gratification and thus quality of my art has suffered, so I can see why my "more finished" work would not be liked very much.
It's a meandering journal post, but I think my conclusion is: I will probably try to cross-link the two sites a bit more often. I've already been doing that to some degree, but now I think I shall commit to it, showing some more finished artwork on my sketchblog as well.
At the same time I'll try to update dA gallery more often, and some of those sketches that I put a splash of colour on or had some interesting idea about will emerge here as well.
And lastly I must make more concious moves to improve.tl;dr
my tumblr is getting more attention than my dA, but I don't intend to leave one for the other. I apologize to my dA audience for not getting out of me as much as they'd like.
